Petrol cars

Engine oil (multigrade)

Protects the engine from wear and heat, and keeps it clean between changes.

Common grades
20W-50 or 15W-40 for older engines; 10W-40 or 5W-30 for many newer ones.
Good to know
The right grade is in your owner's manual, and often on the oil filler cap.
When to change
Usually every 5,000–10,000 km. Change the oil filter at the same time.

Diesel trucks & generators

Heavy-duty diesel engine oil

Diesel engines run hotter and make more soot, so they need oil built for heavy duty. Trucks with an SCR system also need AdBlue, which we stock in 10 L.

Common grades
15W-40 or 20W-50, rated API CI-4 or CK-4, or as the manufacturer specifies.
Good to know
Generators run long hours. Check the oil level every day before starting.
When to change
Trucks by kilometres in the manual. Generators by running hours, often every 100–250 h.

Motorcycles & tricycles

Motorcycle oil (4T or 2T)

Four-stroke bikes and tricycles take 4T oil, made to work with the wet clutch. Two-stroke engines burn 2T oil with the fuel.

Common grades
4T: 20W-50 or 10W-40, rated JASO MA or MA2. 2T: JASO FC or FD.
Good to know
Car engine oil can make a motorcycle clutch slip. Look for 4T and JASO MA on the bottle.
When to change
Small engines work hard. Many need fresh oil every 1,000–3,000 km; check your manual.

Gearboxes & differentials

Gear oil

Thicker than engine oil, with additives that protect gear teeth under heavy load.

Common grades
80W-90 or 85W-140. API GL-4 for many manual gearboxes, GL-5 for most differentials.
Good to know
Gear oil and engine oil are not interchangeable. Check which one your gearbox takes.
When to change
Check the level at every service and change it at the interval in your manual.

Automatics & power steering

ATF (automatic transmission fluid)

Lubricates and cools an automatic gearbox and works the hydraulic controls inside it. Many power-steering systems use it too.

Common grades
Dexron II or III for many older automatics and power steering. Newer gearboxes may need a specific fluid.
Good to know
Fresh ATF is red. If it has turned dark brown or smells burnt, it is time to change it.
When to change
At the interval in your manual, or sooner on hard-working vehicles. Check the level regularly.

Bearings, pins & joints

Multipurpose grease

Stays in place on bearings, pins, bushes, joints and cylinder pivots where liquid oil would run out.

Common grades
Lithium or lithium-complex grease, NLGI 2, for most vehicles and machines.
Good to know
Pump in fresh grease until the old, dirty grease is pushed out of the joint.
When to grease
Heavy equipment often every 8–10 working hours. Vehicles at each service.

Hydraulic machines

Hydraulic oil

Carries force through the pump, valves and cylinders of jacks, tippers, loaders and excavators.

Common grades
ISO VG 46 is the most common. VG 32 for lighter systems, VG 68 for hot, heavy work.
Good to know
Keep it clean. Dirt and water in the oil cause most hydraulic failures.
When to change
Check the level daily on working machines. Change oil and filters at the hours in the manual.

Brakes & clutch

Brake fluid

Passes the force from your pedal to the brakes and the hydraulic clutch.

Common grades
DOT 3 for most cars. Use DOT 4 if your reservoir cap says so.
Good to know
Never top up with engine or hydraulic oil. It swells the rubber seals and the brakes can fail.
When to change
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. Replace it about every two years.
